Elementary School – Ages 6 -15 Pupils are taught a general, academic curriculum over nine years, with grades 1 to 5 considered ‘lower-primary’ and grades 6 to 9 ‘upper-primary.’
Secondary School After basic education children are directed to one of three types of optional secondary school.
1) Gymnásium, Ages 11/13/15 – 19 : The most academic route available, designed for those going to university or college. Students are required to study all subjects, which culminates with completion of the maturita exam (necessary to apply for university). Depending on the ability of the child, they may attend a gymnasium from the age of 11, 13 or 15.
2) Středni Odborná Škola (Secondary Technical School), Ages 15 - 19: Designed for those students who are going into a profession, such as accountancy or teaching, and culminates with a maturita exam (most appropriate for a technically orientated university). An entrance exam is necessary to attend.
3) Středni Odborne Učiliště (Secondary Vocational/Technical School), Ages 15 – 19: Designed for students going into a trade, such as carpentry or masonry. Education is combined with practical experience in the workplace and usually no entrance exam is required. There are an additional two years of study available where students can work towards the maturita exam in order to get into university.
Tertiary Education Following school education students can opt either for a four year degree at an academic institution or a three year study at a ‘professional school.’ Here they gain the practical qualifications needed for middle or high level jobs in professional fields, and are presented with a diploma on completion of the course.
